In commemoration of International Testing Week 2024, an integrated screening activity was conducted to detect HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, and HPV at Pondok Bambu Women’s Correctional Facility. This activity aimed to enhance access to healthcare services for female inmates, a high-risk group for sexually transmitted infections and other communicable diseases. The screening emphasized the importance of early detection for more effective management and treatment, while also raising health awareness among the inmates.
The activity was carried out on November 25, 26, and 28, 2024, at Pondok Bambu Women’s Correctional Facility (LPP), Jakarta. In addition to the LPP clinic, local community health centers (Puskesmas) collaborated to ensure the event’s success, including:
- Puskesmas Kec. Duren Sawit
- Puskesmas Pembantu Pondok Bambu
- Puskesmas Klender 3
- Puskesmas Pembantu Klender 1
A total of 300 inmates participated in screenings for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Syphilis. Additionally, 60 inmates underwent HPV screening through HPV DNA testing and Pap smears.
Among those tested:
- 7 cases of HIV (all already on ARVs with no new infections),
- 7 cases of Hepatitis B,
- 9 cases of Hepatitis C, and
- 15 cases of Syphilis.
Note: Still waiting for the results of the HPV DNA and Pap smear tests.
The follow-up plan for all positive cases are as follows:
- Monitoring adherence to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy for inmates with positive HIV results.
- Referring inmates with positive HBsAg and anti-HCV results to Pengayoman Hospital for confirmatory tests and treatment.
- Providing syphilis treatment directly through the Class IIA Jakarta Women’s Correctional Facility clinic.
- Managing HPV cases (if lesions are detected) according to the National Health Insurance (JKN) referral system, with potential referrals to Dharmais Cancer Hospital for inmates requiring further care.
This initiative was supported by funding from Coalition Plus through the South Asia Southeast Asia (SASEA) platform, covering the provision of test kits, meals, transportation for staff, and other logistics such as consumables.
We express our gratitude to all parties for their collaboration in improving health in Indonesia.
