Today we had the opportunity to be part of the team for development of standards for communicable disease, especially HIV-TB, at the Technical Implementation Units for Correctional Facilities.
Why is it important for us to be involved in HIV and TB issues? Despite the fact that most of the peers we support are people with Hepatitis B and C, many are also living with HIV. Hence, susceptibility to TB is higher. In addition, if the person is currently taking TB treatment, then Hepatitis C treatment must be postponed because there are drug-drug interactions. Realizing the importance of comprehensive health services within the Correctional Institution, we are pleased to be involved in this meaningful effort.
